Thinner phones are good but there is probably a point of diminishing returns. You don't want it so thin that it will snap easily.

Newer phones are getting bigger in height and width since they are becoming mini-televisions (personally I do not like). To decrease the overall volume and weight, phone companies are designing thinner phones. It is not really a silly competition since there is a practical use for thinner phones.
